Eating My Way Through Greece

One of my ways of discovering a new culture is through food. Mediterranean food has so many different varieties and is so diverse, that even in the same country the food can be completely different. I tried so many different things for the first time, and let myself out of my comfort zone. However, the amount of coffee I drank during this trip definitely calls for concern. The coffee in this country is just so darn good!

Eat. Sleep. Gyros. Repeat.

Gyros, souvlakis, whatever – I don’t care what it is, if it’s wrapped in a pita and smothered with tzatziki give it to me. While I was in Santorini, I must’ve gone to Lucky’s Souvlakis at least three or four times. I mean, for €2.50 and made right in front of you, it’s hard to say no.

Much needed frozen yogurt after a long day in Athens
Grilled mussels in a lemon garlic butter sauce from Pelaisos, Aegina, Aegina
Tzatziki is my favorite food group
Mussels risotto with Naxian potatoes and sparkling lemonade

If you’re heading to Naxos, definitely check out Meze 2. Just the view of the harbor is enough to sit and watch for hours. Doesn’t hurt also that their portion sizes are enormous! I got three meals out of this one dish of risotto.

Complimentary desserts are the best desserts

I’ve really started to appreciate Greece, because not once — but TWICE — I was given a free dessert. Well, once was because the guy at the table next to me accidentally spilled his drink on my foot but it was really no big deal. I still always welcome complimentary sweets.

Well worth the spill
Fresh Fried Calamari from San Allote, Apollonos, Naxos
Greek wine has definitely cracked my top ten for favorite type of wine from abroad
Baklava in Naxos
Bougasta with vanilla cream and cappuccino Freddo from Svoronos Bakery, Fira, Santorini
Cream cheese bagel and cappuccino freddo from Coffee Island, Santorini
Wine and cheese tasting at Oia Vineyart
Santorini white wine and grilled octopus with fava and grilled onions from Nikolas Taverna, Fira, Santorini

My most adventurous food that I tried in Greece would definitely be octopus. I heard that Santorini was the place to try it, and that it would be the freshest I’d ever get. It was for sure something I was a bit scared to try, and the chef personally came out and to make sure this was something I’d be comfortable eating, since it’s an unusual dish for tourists. The chef was super sweet and when I gushed about how delicious it was, she was so happy that I tried something new and enjoyed it.

Perfect sunset to another beautiful day in Santorini

So many different foods and cuisine styles, so many new types of dishes I’ve come to love and try to recreate at home. Everything was so fresh and mouth-watering, even the McDonald’s I had in Athens (Shhh!!) was pretty decent. My food journey through Greece is definitely something I’ll always remember.
