Day Trip to Szentendre

The picturesque countryside of Pest is definitely something I recommend visiting when coming to Budapest.

Located only about 40 minutes away by train from the city, it makes the perfect day trip. Tickets cost 310 HUF (~1 USD) each way, and can only be bought at the station before getting on the train. The train ride itself was such an experience. The cars felt like they were from the 1940s and had no AC. It was relaxing though to just watch the neighborhoods pass by as we traveled through the outskirts of Budapest.

It’s also possible to reach Szentendre by river boat, which can take over an hour and a half from Budapest, and about an hour to come back. There is a morning and afternoon departure from Budapest, and a 5pm return ferry.

This artist’s village is so cute and quaint, there’s just something magical about this place. There are several small museums I’d say definitely check out at least one. I checked out the marzipan museum, and I was so fascinated by the literal works of art made out of the confectionery. Also, the workers are always giving out generous samples of their treats. There was also a wine museum and a chocolate museum, which I heard are also worth checking out, as well as a few other cutesy small art museums.

Feeling a bit hungry after walking around all morning, we stopped at Álomlángos for a snack. The lángos were so good, and it was a very local place. When we got there, only school kids were lining up.

This little village is perfect for a day trip, or even a half day trip out of Budapest. The pastel colors of the buildings remind me of being in a fairy tale book, and there’s so much to explore.
